For a living or more of a hobby?

So how many of you use stocks and trading as a form of your income? What would you say you average a year.. whats some of your best $ made and lost. Yes i'm a newbie and I'm just trying to get into the game. I'm a full time student and work part time. I figure this is the best time of my life to start learning about the market. I figure if I take a big hit my life isn't over and I can always make money if i play right and learn trends well enough. Right now I'm just kinda watching stock before I start dumping money into it. Just wanna get an idea of what to expect so I don't set goals too high or sell myself short. When I do finally get in I plan on using scottrade and i'll start with about $650 and mix it through prob 3 dif stocks. Thanks for anyhelp and I Just wanted to make my presence noticed.

Hey Eric,

welcome!

I'm pretty new too. For me, the stock market is about fun & also making some "pocket money".

I think you've for sure joined the right site! Everyone on this site is soo helpful, and don't be afraid to ask any questions.

As a newbie, there was ALOT to learn and still is a lot to learn.

There were questions that i thought might sound "silly" or "dumb" but you gotta ask them, else you're gonna loose money.

Take this week for example. I bought stocks in FMLY at 0.0035. the next day it was down to 0.0017!!.....at that point i was worried and was thinking of selling. But some of the more experienced guys shared their views and opinions on the stock with me and i decided to hold til today. I sold earlier today, and yes i did make a loss, but i learned how to limit my loss...important i know now!

I also purchased GreenCat's CD seminar, and it was very very useful.

So anyways, that is my 2 penny's worth!

Good luck, and again...ASK AWAY....DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK!

I would love to do it for a living, but my wife and kids take my money, so what is left is just a hobby.

hobby sort of

Well Eric I also have to work but being a contract worker who only works about 7 to 9 months out of the year, I get to make some money watching and playing the market. If you check out the 500 dollars expirement thread you will see that I have not done to bad. I am playing those stocks for real but actually started with 4000.00 cash but only record what would have been made using a start of 1000.00. I have been able to just about double my money since the middle of january, with 97% profit. The one thing you must remember that is crucial to able to read a chart ( GreenCats cd is very good for this), and to take a look a little farther back. There are all kinds of ways to screen the market to find what you like exhibiting the criteria you are looking for in a stock. I use two methods for screening Stockfetcher a web based scan and Amibroker a stand alone program I purchased. Using these two method I can scan the entire market in order to limit it down to 5 or six stocks that give me what I am looking for in a stock. Then the choice is base on market action during the first half hour of the day on most occasions.
