New to this board ! (Any Canadians here ?)

Hi, I just signed up last week and thought I'd say hi.

I'm fairly new to the online investing thing but I figured it was never too late to start.

Are there any Canadians here who can shed some light on a good online broker ? TD Waterhouse seems to be very popular as is Etrade Canada. I'm presently leaning towards Etrade since they have lower commission rates for the type of trading I'll be doing. (Trading moderate risk shares of under $1.)

Ameritrade Canada looks really good with their ~$10 trades but the 15% withholding tax really scares me.

So... can anyone give the stock symbol of a share which will quadruple by the end of the week ? ... Just kidding of course.

Ken.

Welcome. Most people here will swear up and down about Ameritrade. Personally I cant stand them, I gave them a cashiers check from Chase Manhattan and they still made me wait the 10 friggen days which cost me a lot of money. But thats my personal story.

Also I hate the fact that you cant walk into their office and do business with a face. Call me old fashioned but I like the idea of doing business with a person not a computer.

I use scottrade, their commissions for stocks under a USD are $7 + 1/2 of the principle but honestly speaking. I think its worth it being able to actually walk into an office and talk to a physical being. And besides, I gave them a check from Chase and they treated it like cash.

Scottrades tech services, like charts and stuff arnt that great, but I didnt think ameritrades were either... Personally I get my information from a variety places and wouldnt rely upon my online brokers stuff anyways, I think Yahoo offers a great deal of fundamental information and Barchart offers about 2/3 of all technical information I need. So much for ameritrade or scottrades financial information.

But chose who you like. I dont like E=Trade, too expensive and snobby.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

Admin, that interactivebrokers.com looks amazing ! Couldn't believe the low commission rates. Unfortunately, I've opened an account with e-trade Canada. Hmm... Maybe I'll use etrade for mutual funds and open with interactive as well.

Can you (or some other Canadian) give me some info regarding the withholding tax on US stocks ? I understand that it's 15% but is it taken out of your capital gains based on one buy/sell transaction ? If so, what happens to capital losses ?

Ken.

Open an ameritrade Canada account.
Also open a TD but use Td for pk stocks and canada stocks.
